There are so many great restaurants in downtown Palm Springs like Eight4Nine that fabulous places at the other end of the city like Mr. Lyons Steakhouse can get overlooked.

Whether you come for a meal, partake in happy hour, or enjoy cocktails in their secret speakeasy, Seymour’s, a visit to Mr. Lyons is a must.

Formerly Lyons English Grille, a Palm Springs fixture since the 1940s, restauranteur Tara Lazar creative magic has turned Mr. Lyons Steakhouse into Palm Springs’ best-kept secret.

Lazar describes Mr. Lyons Steakhouse as “old school and modern at the same time with a sophisticated edge.” Think Rat Pack meets the 21st century. Old Hollywood glamour with a modern Great Gatsby twist.

Each room is uniquely decorated. The main dining room, the Salon boasts luxurious green velvet booths.

The black stripes on the marble floor draw your eye to the mirrored prisms on the ceiling in the center of the room.

The Lounge maintains an old English pub feel, dark and dimly lit with the original wood chairs.

The Conservatory overlooking the patio features a green marble wall and Edison bulb light fixtures that resemble door knobs.

Vintage modern decor aside, food and service are where Mr. Lyons shines. It’s considered one of the best steak restaurants in Palm Springs.

Chef Eddie Moran sources from small local farms food while skillfully recreating great dishes from other locations.

Pro-tip: You can modify some dishes at Mr. Lyons Steakhouse.

Vegetarians can have a vegetable version of the Beef Wellington.

Servers are quick and efficient, instinctively filling water glasses. Whisking away plates while topping off wine glasses.

We enjoyed a food and wine pairing in the Conservatory. Chef Eddie Moran created the appetizers and wine expert Jessie Casanova chose the wine. Casanova is a Level 3 Sommelier.

Pro-tip: You can have a similar experience when you book a Mr. Lyons wine dinner.

Radishes & Blue Cheese

Our first course was Radishes & Blue Cheese with herbs paired with a 2017 Marco Felluga Mongris Pinot Grigio.

The dish was almost too pretty to eat. The pink and purple radishes contrasted beautifully against the blue cheese dressing. The Pinot Grigo’s acacia flowers and apples notes delicately offset the radishes’ spicy peppery kick.

Black Cod Escabeche

Second course was the Black Cod Escabeche with dill, creme fraiche, celery, and potato confit paired with a 2016 La Follette Los Pimeros Pinot Noir.

The lightly pickled cod was offset by the soft, buttery potato confit. Both enhanced the black tea, cherry, and rhubarb flavors of the Pinot Noir.

Berkshire Pork Belly

Our last course was a Berkshire Pork Belly with rhubarb, fennel, aperol puree paired with a 2016 Margerum M5 Red Blend.

The full-bodied Red Blend (44% Grenanche, 36% Syrah, 12% Mourvedre, 5% Counoise, and 3% Cinsaut) notes of red fruits, cranberry was a nice compliment to the pork belly.

Be sure to stop for drinks at Seymour’s Speakeasy before or after your meal at Mr. Lyons Steakhouse. Named after Lazar’s dad, an entertainment attorney, the secret room can hold about 25 people.

Pro-tip: Looking for the entrance? Turn right at the golden lion statute and pass through the black curtain.

After a night of drinking, consider staying at the Monkey Tree Hotel.

Happy Hour

I’m all about the Happy Hour. Traveling or not, I always search for the best Happy Hour deals.

Mr. Lyons Steakhouse offers a daily Happy Hour from 4 pm to 7 pm in the Lounge. Drinks only specials the first hour with food specials during the final two hours.

The best value is the Mr. Lyons Burger. Normally $22 but only $12 during Happy Hour. You save $8 on the Big Dipper (shaved prime rib sandwich).

Pro-tip: Locals love the Happy Hour Prime Rib Medallion.
